We built a house last year in Katy. Because of the recent temps, we had to turn on the heat (gas) over the last few days. I've since noticed a weird noise coming from the ceiling on the 1st floor mainly. It sounds like a very light tapping/popping sound...it's not constant and not very loud and I only notice it when I turn on the heat. Anyone know what this could be?

I'm guessing it's sediment in the hot water heater, not the furnace.

But, you may want to go up there and look at the flame on the furnace.

Have you ever turned on the heater before now? I ask because we just got through building our house. The vent covers they used are plastic. So when the heat came on, they would make popping noises because they were expanding with the heat. Very annoying. We had them come back out and they loosened the screws on all of the vents, and the popping noises have since stopped.

When it got really cold last week, we used the heat for the first time. That's when it started...our vent covers aren't plastic so I don't know if that would make a difference.

Default Exhaust fan?

It could be the exhaust fan that comes on prior to the heat exchange igniting (to remove carbon monoxide).

Maybe my description is not the best...it's more of a creaking sound...u know the sound your house makes when it's very quiet (a lot of ppl refer to this sound as the house "moving"). I hope this helps...

Not to hijack this thread, but just yesterday I started hearing a popping sound (almost like popcorn popping) coming from the cabinet right above the microwave?
I just hope its not a gas leak or something.
Anyone have any ideas on what it is?
