We're looking to take a week in either April or May to visit Houston and want to choose the best week for seeing festivals, rodeos, etc, and taking advantage of anything going on unique to the city. I know its a big city, so there's got to be lots of great things happening! We are likely relocating to Houston this summer (yeah, we know about the heat, thanks!) so some of our time in April or May will be scouting out the area (NE is likely where we'll settle) but we want to choose a week that has some great local activities if at all possible. Can anyone give us suggestions as to what's going on during these two months that will help us narrow down to the week we want to travel to Houston? We're in our thirties, no kids, and our interests are very diverse, so all ideas are welcome. Thanks so much!

The Rodeo is in March, so if you can come then and get tickets, I think that's about as unique to Houston as it gets Welcome - Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

The Astro's season starts April 5th, so if you like baseball, that's a lot of fun.

The International Festival is two weekends in April. That's neat. http://www.ifest.org/

The Art Car Parade is May 8th http://www.orangeshow.org/art-car/

The Pasadena Strawberry Fest is May 14-16 http://www.strawberryfest.org/ I've never been, can't comment on if it's any good or not.

Also, Houston is a great place for the arts. If there's a particular play or performance you want to see, you might look into that.

The Bayou City Art Festival is March 26- 28 - I always try to go.
A good site is www.Houston.com

The Orange Show is a Houston experience. I believe it's open most of the year. A fun thing to do (since you are coming in ideal weather - visit the Museum of Fine Arts - from there take the rail to downtown and have lunch or dinner, take the rail back to the museum and pick up your car from the museum parking lot.

Kemah is fun and not that far away. Visit the Aquarium restaurant there, which has a multi-story aquarium running up through the restaurant - and good food.

Japanese Festival is coming up in April. Overpriced, lukewarm sushi and a bunch of nerds dressed like anime characters. I enjoy it, even though I shouldn't.

Thai new year (Songkran) is in April and they hold celebrations at a temple in Sugarland, I believe. Lao new year is also celebrated in Houston around the same time.

Holi is celebrated in Houston at the end of March. Holi is a holiday popular in India where people get together and get each other soaking wet by throwing water at one another. Then, they throw brightly colored powder at each other so that it sticks all over them. Not sure where this is being celebrated this year but it'd be fun.

That Holi celebration sounds really fun, actually... I think I'm gonna try to find out more about that!

Houston's International Film Festival, WorldFest takes place April 9-18th.
43rd Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival

Theres a festival for San Jacinto Day at the San Jacinto Monument which includes a battleground reenactment of the battle for TX independence. A drive out of the city, though.Takes place April 24th.
San Jacinto Museum of History—Home Page

The Houston Dragonboat Festival is fun to watch, and i even participated last year, but it wasnt this one, just a smaller one, but from the same organization that makes this one. Takes place on May 1st.
Texas Dragon Boat Association

A Cinco de Mayo celebration in the Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park. Heard it had record crowds last year, and its in the best part of town: Hermann Park. Real close to all the museums. If you couldn't guess when it takes place, its on May 5.

Oooh, the Art Car Parade. The biggest in the world and oldest of its kind in the US. Seen by over 250,000 people. Haven't been, but looks like fun. Takes place on May 8th.

Might also check out some Bayou tours on pontoon boats which range from bat tours, boat cruises, and history tours.

Most of these things are free.

I can't remember what we paid last year, but I want to say around $15 per adult at the gate to get it. We might have been able to pay less if we bought the tickets in advance. They'll probably post the price on-line when it gets closer to the date.

We parked in a garage which was like $5 or $7 I think. Beer was a bit expensive at like $6 a glass but you buy tickets and then pay with tickets which it a little annoying. It was fun though - I'm looking forward to it. Bring cash, I don't think they take credit cards.
