I was previously aware that property taxes are high in Texas. In glancing over some of these forums on the subject, I observe frequent references to extremely expensive HOAs as well.

Are there any regions in the Katy area where there are HOA-free homes on larger lots, where one can own horses and other livestock; obtain permits for and build outbuildings like garages and barns without unreasonable county hassle and cost; and which hopefully might have lower tax rates?

NMAZ, it sounds like you're looking for something similar to what we were hoping to find two years ago. Unfortunately, we couldn't find anything suitable that would enable us to stay within the Katy school district. (Actually, that's not true -- I found a great place that was only $3.4million, but my husband said "no" --what a killjoy!) If the school district isn't your main draw to this area, I'd go a little further out and check Richmond, Fulshear, and Rosenberg. Good luck and let us know if you find anything!

Use this website and search the counties of Ft. Bend, Colorado and Waller.
Texas Land for Sale, Texas Farms for Sale, Texas Ranches for Sale

Ft. Bend of course would be most of the Katy area.

Haha, at some point I will be asking the question about NON-HOA neighborhoods on City Data. I don't get what people see in having them. I would rather not have them, or not have them as involved.

People hate Communism, but love HOA's?

One of the troubles with finding this type of property is the acreage restrictions for platting and planning. In Harris County the minimum acreage that can be transferred without exceptional costs being put forward is 10 acres. If you interested in a 10-20 acre site for a home in Katy ISD I can help you out.

Schools are not the tiniest concern for us - we have no kids. I have heard that there are major ag/business employers in the area and that might suit my husband.

We just wouldn't want to end up being a zillion miles out of town. We currently have daily round trips of 80+ miles.

In that case, I'd definitely expand my search outside of Katy. There are quite a few properties listed on the site provided by Easily Amused.

Kenpar, I'm with you on that!
