Sorry, I also posted this in the chat thread but noticed it's not used much and figured I might get a better response in a reg. thread so here goes...

Hello everyone, I had a question..

My wife and I are thinking about relocating to Houston on our tax return which will be roughly $4k.

We've decided that we'll have enough cash to pay our bills and rent a room in an extended stay hotel for two months. Do you think this is enough time to find work ? She's a Pharm. Tech. and I'm about as entry level as you can get.

I would like to just get some honest opinions from some current residents of Houston.

Thanks.

If you don't have a job lined up then I would not recommend moving here and living off 2 months savings at a hotel.

Thanks for the replies, I'm hoping to get a few more atleast as it looks like we're leaving within the next few weeks.. and no, no jobs lined up. We figure we'll have a better shot at finding work in Houston then we have in Nashville.

It depends on what you are willing to do. If you have a great attitude and will do anything...even while looking for an ideal job...you will make it. Restaurants always need waiters...etc. Just look at craigslist or indeed.com under jobs. There are a ton. You can't be too proud!!!

I know a few people that sit around and moan about not having work, but I see plenty of jobs out there. They may not be your ideal position, but it pays the bills until you find one.

So my answer is...it's up to you. If you have the drive and the tenacity anything can happen.

That sounds pretty good and was a really helpful reply, I've done bussing and stuff like that before so that would be no problem. I'd just need a job to pay the bills temporarily..

Not sure about the job market for waiters in Houston. I had the impression that it also got hit hard?
Forget Craigslist. They started charging a fee for the listings about a year ago. Ever since they started doing that, you have barely any listings. It's probably 1/4 - 1/5 of what it was before they started charging. Not all cities though, but Houston was one of them
Perhaps I'm wrong and the restaurants are still looking for wait staff like crazy.

I appreciate the commentary on resaurants and waitstaffs but I think that was just an example

If I had $10k, I wouldn't be leaving Nashville.

We both have good cars.
