We are relocating soon and I've been reading all the posts re: Sugarland v. Katy and have noticed that some people commented that Sugarland's crime rate is higher than Katy. I haven't seen this supported anywhere in the news, etc. -- is this true? Is it substantially more crime? Does anyone know if it is more violent crime or property type? I guess I'm just looking for some insight from people in the communities -- do you feel safe in both Katy and Sugar Land, or is one better than the other in terms of crime/safety?

Thanks for your insight!

I don't know about the numbers but just from watching the news it seems that there is more high profile crime in Sugarland.

Overall they're both quite safe.

Katy is a big area... you have north Katy and south Katy, east, west, etc. I suspect it has many of the same issues in commercial areas (mall, shopping centers etc.) Sugar Land does. Those areas almost always have way more crimes than the residential subdivisions.

As far as Sugar Land, it's still a very safe place statistically speaking and always makes these "safe cities" lists. There have been some very high profile incidents recently... the mayor being one. Of course these get talked about non-stop on the news and on here, being that no one can believe such a thing could happen in Stepford. So it gets a little overblown if you ask me.

IMHO, there isn't much of a significant difference.

No kidding..I was working at our Sugarland location about two weeks ago..and the Radio Shack right next to us got robbed TWICE the same day! The first incident..they stole 4 tv's..and the same night they came back and broke the front door and took all the TVs ONLY?

WOW..Could not believe it..

I live in north Sugar Land. A higher percentage of the crime (which isn't much overall in Sugar Land to begin with) occurs north of 90, South of Bellfort between Dairy Ashford and Burney/Main. Our subdivision was being plagued with driveway robberies a few years ago. A lot of recently arrived Asians live where I live and they are big robbery target in general. I never buy the "Sugar Land is too close to Alief" argument as pretty much every nic area in Houston is as close or even closer to a neighborhood not as nice as their own.

I'm asian in Alief and never been robbed. our community has upscale cars too, even sportscars on the driveways. I have 2 bimmers and no car related crime here. communities need to have gates in 'diversified' neighborhoods

I can really only comment about Katy, and since it's such a huge area the crime stats don't tell the story. Where I live, in Cinco Ranch west, pretty far from any major highways (ie escape routes) there hasn't been a stitch of violent crime in the two years I've been here. Not an ounce. The few breakins I've heard of in South Katy were no where near me, pretty much all close to 1093 or 99 or I-10. I *feel* totally safe, but I still lock my doors and use an alarm...just cuz.
