My girlfriend and I are getting ready to graduate in a year give or take, so we're trying to make a list of cities that might be nice to live in. We both like the big city feel and I despise the cold weather.

I will be graduating with a degree in chemical engineering and she will have a law degree from a top university. Are the salaries decent here?

How is the job market for these fields? Would you consider Houston on the incline or decline?

Does Houston have an international feel to it like a large city or does it feel like more of a specific population? My girlfriend was originally from India so we like to cook indian food and go to restaurants, would we be able to find anything like this in Houston? I also really like latin american food, even mexican and I speak spanish so it would be nice to be around this also.

Pretty general thread I know, but we're just getting a general idea and comparing different cities for now.

You'll have no problem finding opportunities to speak Spanish in Houston. There is a fairly sizeable Indian population as well as Asian population here to. You'll find a good mix of everyone.

You can't go anywhere on the internet without tripping over a story about Houston's favorable job market, compared to the rest of the country.

Forbes recently just released a list of cities where the recession is easing...Houston was number 4. They've also named it one of the best cities for young people.

I honestly feel like Houston has one of the most diverse populations in the nation. Our hispanic population is second only to San Antonio and to say that there is a shortage of Indian culture here would be a grave understatement. In fact, we're home to the nation's third largest number of consular offices of foreign governments (behind D.C and N.Y I would assume). In all honesty, there is literally something for everybody here. Moreover, Houstonians have a long standing reputation for being some of the nicest people in the country (although we're a little crazy behind the wheel of a car :-P).

I should also add that there was a news report on one of the local stations a few weeks ago about how Houston's legal sector is starting to show signs of lacking diversity. As a result, firms and local/state government alike are seeking out minorities to further diversify their ranks so your girlfriend (if she's well qualified) should have no problem finding a job here.

Good luck with your choice!!
