Is Houston a great place for a single black female? How is traveling? I am originally from NJ.

Hi, I'm not from Houston but am also thinking of moving there. I posted a similar question in this thread: "African-American family searching for the "Good Life"

Might be a good place to look. I think that there are other threads as well.

I just returned from a vacation in NYC, Connecticut, RI, Mass. From my observations Minorities have a far better life in Houston. I got tired of the racist jokes in those NE states. One is far too many for my taste and we heard a lot at certain gatherings on our trip. My daughters apt neighbor is a very nice man who is a school teacher and historian. He is the only minority in her Manhattan building why?

In Houston, I have heard one minority joke about 3 yrs ago from an aquaintance and asked him never to tell me things like that again.... He has since not spoken to me... On my trip to the NE the putting down of minorities was more than I can handle.

I guess I just do not surround myself with folks who want to belittle people for their race or religion etc.

I also experienced comments on regional bigotry about the South or SW in the NE as well.

All I can say, is about Houston, It's not there for me. I guess people know not to say or do things that would be offensive to others because of their race, religion etc. I welcome all neighbors who are hard working people who follow a good path of citizenship and behavior. That is my criteria as a Houstonian.

Houston will give anyone who's hard working and a good citizen a fair shake. It's one of the characteristics of this very welcoming city. Of course, sometimes that welcoming spirit comes back to bite us in the ass (ie. Katrina), but on the whole it works.

If you're African American then Houston is your city. Very nice ethnic mix with a high proportion of blacks from all walks of life. Of course, there are many other things to take in to account prior to moving to any city. Understand the cost of living, economy, political climate, ordinances to get a feel for the city.

Be prepared for a lot of humidity/ smoldering heat, mosquito's and lack of public transportation. Big city with even a bigger sprawl, you'll be driving a lot. Texans are very nice people and there is a lot of culture. I think you'll be fine just make sure that Texas and Houston is where you want to live.

that's not true at all...the city bus system out here has saved my life (i've spent most of my time out here without a vehicle) and when i didn't know the area well enough to make use of the public transit, i just called a cab (which is pretty expensive though so it was always my last resort)

as far as the question goes...

i am a young black female and i love Houston

my only complaints? the air is horrible (but what major city has "good" air?) and i can't get certain jobs (that i am otherwise qualified for) because i only speak english (but don't worry...i'm working on that)

I am relocating to Houston from LA in June to pursue my graduate studies at UH and would like information on connecting with a roommate it can be a month to month situation or a six month lease opportunity. I have been looking on CL but I am finding it difficult to "gage" the areas etc...ideally, I would like to hear from those of you who have relocated from the west coast to Houston. I am open to renting a room or locating a new place together. I currently reside in the century city area of LA and love the the downtown feel of LA, seeking something similar in Houston. Not interested in living in the surburbs. However, high rise living I am open to or a lovely room in a beautiful modern home. I am flexible with discussing the monthly rent via phone, email or skpe. But mostly I am interested in connecting with those who have recently relocated from LA or considering a move to Houston within the next few months. Thanks!
