Deer Park, Pasadena, and La Porte are all very close, and all have very nice areas, as well as not-so-nice parts. I have lived in all three, and am currently (and probably permanently) in Pearland, where my kids are in elementary school. We love it, and it's pretty easy to get anywhere south of I-10 (including downtown) in a half hour or so, depending on the time of day.

Pearland is one of the fastest growing suburbs.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on good areas with affordable rentals.
If you're working in Deer Park, try Pearland, Friendswood or League City. We rented a 3 bedroom 2 bath home in Pearland for about $1300. Try the Southfield Village area in Pearland. Good schools, shopping, never a need to drive far and an acceptable commute to Deer Park in the mornings as you will be driving against the rush hour both ways.

Katy is a nice area with a wide diversity and easy access to Houston.
Woodlands may be a bit steep for the budget and Conroe may be a bit too far north. Depending upon your work location, you might look NW towards the Cypress area as well

Katy and Cypress would make for a long and miserable commute to Deer Park......

Good grief! The Woodlands is almost an hour and a half in good traffic. Katy and Cypress are a pretty good clip too. I would never recommend those areas to someone working in Deer Park.

Another option is Falls Creek in northeast Houston, near Humble. You could get to Deer Park from there in about 30 minutes by way of the Sam Houston Parkway, the NE portion of which is finally being completed as a full-access freeway. There are other options as well, though I'm not sure you'll be able to find as many rentals available, like in Summerwood.
