I wouldn't feel safe in certain hoods of Houston, but I would feel completely unsafe in huge swathes of the NYC burroughs like Queens. Upper Manhattan, no thank you. Last I read in the news gangs are making a comeback in NYC?

Wow! I knew the "safest city in America" bit was just PR for NYC. Sure lower Manhattan is really safe, maybe the gentrified areas of Brooklyn too but the rest, Queens? The Bronx? No way.

Everything depends where in Queens and Bronx. Some areas of Q and B are the safest of NYC. NYC is build this way, - 1 great area right next to "ghetto". Same story with Brooklyn.
