Ok! I thought that since Galveston is within Houston's Metro, I thought Galveston's tourism industry benefits Houston's economy.

If they also come here and do something and spend some money, sure. But, say, you have A&M students going down to Galveston from College Station for a weekend or Spring Break or whatever. They drive around/through Houston, go spend the whole time in Galveston, then go straight back to CS - then all Houston did was provide some freeway scenery for the trip.

Galveston is really just a regional tourist destination. If somebody in, say, Ohio is going to choose between a vacation in Galveston and a vacation in New Orleans, guess which one they're going to pick.

Now what would help tie visitors to Galveston in with Houston is if they got a rail line going from here to there. Then those visitors to Galveston who are making a somewhat extended stay have the option of leaving the island for a day to do things in Houston without burning more gas, dealing with parking etc. But that doesn't exist as of yet.
