This is where I will be working: http://tinyurl.com/ydlgn4d (broken link)

I'm looking for a 1 bedroom apartment with a <30 minute commute. I'm moving from out of state, so I'm not familiar with the city at all. Above all else I would like to live in a safe area, at an apartment complex with good security so I will not have to worry about getting my car stolen, robbed, etc. I'm 24 years old and the highest I could go would be $1000/month for rent.

I'm open for any advice, which could include but not limited to areas to avoid, particular apartments to check out, anything else you think I need to know. Also, I'm looking to move in around June 1st. How long in advance is wise to sign a lease to secure a good place to live?

Try to find something North of Westheimer....Do not even look at places South of Richmond to 59. There is a new loft style place on gessner between Westheimer and Briar Forest. I have no idea about rent. Also look at the place near Boheme and Beltway 8 near Memorial.

Clay - I use to work in that very same block - about 10 years ago. Back then, I lived at the CreekStone apts just north of Briar Forest - just on the west side of the beltway. Never had any problems then. I agree with the other post - I would not live south of Richmond. That area seems to make the news on a daily basis.

Alexan at Memorial Bend. You could even rent a Townhouse at The Pines for that..I think. Don't know what the apartments in CityCentre are going for, but that would be a perfect location for a 24 year old working on the westside.

There are a lot of apartment complexes on Eldridge just south of Katy Fwy. If you want something more west, try Lakes at Cinco Ranch in Katy at 99 (Grandparkway) and Westheimer. We currently live there and love the area. It's probably around 18 miles from your workplace. Another good apartment complex in Katy is Oak Park Trails on Mason Rd. about 2 miles south of Katy Fwy. Depending on the neighborhood, some apartments rent quicker than others. Like in Katy, apartments rent faster because people want their kids to be in a good school system.

We moved here 3 months ago and did a lot of apt. searching on the west side. Just send me a private message and I can give you more info.

I think you can do less than $1,000 for a 1-bedroom apt at Post Oak Park apartments on San Felipe (it's one block north of Westheimer near 610). Google for "post oak park apartments houston" and you'll find its website. There are two "phases" I and II. (Phase II is more expensive, so go with Phase I for your price range) I've lived in both, in total for about 2 years now. I think it's very safe and quiet. Never had any issues with crime, though the apartment people will send out flyers if something happens. I moved to Houston from New Jersey, so I was also a newcomer. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
