I want to move to Houston, and I've always been so attracted to the idea of living near a beach. I know the Houston beaches are not very attractive compared to other beaches, but I know I would still love it, because being near the water is so special. However, I know that Galveston has had many rough times with weather in the past. Is moving here a good idea, or am I going to find myself having to relocate shortly after?

P.S. I plan on renting an apartment, not buying a home.

Visit but don't move there. Some people love it and some hate it. I am actually a hater. It has some very beautiful historical homes and a few nice hotels but thats about it. The rest of the place is very run down and I am sorry to say we just did not feel safe except over by the sea wall and even that was ify. Too many tropical storms/hurricanes to contend with and in areas they still have no recovered from the last go around. I would post a pic or two from last weekend but can't figure it out.

Overall Galveston is pretty safe there is a area that is 4 blks by 4 blks that is geto just stay away & you will be fine. If you have kids I would say Galveston is not the place for you the school there plain suck, now if you do not you can live there & work in Texas City La Maruqe or Dickinson

OP, you said you wanted to move to Houston. Did you really mean you wanted to move to Galveston, or are you thinking of moving to Houston, and just visiting Galveston. There is a big difference.

Agreed with all posts above. Galveston has some really cool and unique places to visit, but a lot of the main part of town is also run down.

Are you being facetious? To me those pics don't really show me a good time. It looks dirty and run down. To each their own though.

Downtown is very nice. I wouldn't exactly call it "run down". Galveston is one of the oldest cities in Texas so you have to take that into account when making such assumptions.

Galveston is the New Orleans of Texas.

I am a Galveston fan. There are ghettos but what real Texas city doesn't have ghettos? The beach is not as nice as many other places, but its good enough for me when I visit. I like the historic areas, like everyone else. The population is only 65,000 or so, but it feels to me like it has amenities / retail of about a 200,000 population city.
