Wondering if I could get some help on the best route out of Houston from IAH area if I am heading to Austin at about 5pm on wednesday?

Google shows similar times for taking BW8 to I10 and then 71W or heading around BW8 to 290 and taking that right to Austin.

Any opinions on the better route? Or an alternate route that might be better?

Thanks!

I would go with I-10 and not 290. I usually manage to go 80 mph all the way to Austin.

I prefer I-10 to 71. Just be sure you don't take business 71 (that is slow through town).

Perfect, thanks. I assume the second exit off I-10 for 71 (feeder road) is the one we will want.

since it's at 5pm on a weekday, and coming from IAH, i would go beltway8 to 290. 290 is gonna be closer than i-10 when coming from iah/beltway 8. plus, most of the traffic on 290 is inside the beltway. and the traffic on the beltway would be going the opposite way.

The problem with 290 to Austin is all the stops and go's out there. I-10 and 71 is virtually interstate all the way to Bastrop.

i think the key thing is the time of day he/she will be driving to austin.....the quicker he/she can get out of houston, the better.

Leaving at 5 pm is the issue. What about taking 45N to 2920 and cutting through Spring and Tomball on the way to 290. That way you dont spend an hour on the Katy freeway getting out of town.

Yes and no. Believe it or not, it's about the same time on either I-10/71 or 290. 290 is shorter, but the stops you mention make it about equal. The real factor is (1) where in Houston you are starting from, and (2) where in Austin you want to end up. If you are going anywhere from downtown Austin south, take I-10. North of downtown Austin, take 290.

Having said that, for the OP, I would take Beltway 8 to 290 to Austin. The extra time to get to I-10 will never be made up. UNLESS... your Austin destination is around where 71 dumps you into town.
