Why would you do it for your whole neighborhood?

OP you are a nice guy to want to do that for your whole neighborhood. But, you are going to have to seriously think about the content people will be accessing on your connection(which will be traced back to you). And the amount of output your router, or several of your routers, will have to put out will be pretty high. And the connection you will have to buy will also put a dent in your pocket. So expect to put in some work and money. I would also think you would have to find spots to put these routers. Which means you would have to ask for permission from someone maybe.

I don't have much of an idea how this could work. But, the inner geek in me would think it would be awesome for a "regular" person to do it. You could maintain your own WiFi system! And you could give certain people access to it that wouldn't abuse the system. It's easy for big companies. Hey, maybe you should look up how big companies do it. What types of routers and cables they use. Good luck!

Is this a possibility? Others' Internet browsing, emails etc being traced back to you if someone uses your network? I ask because a brand new neighbor asked me if I had wireless and then said could he get on my network and he would pay me $10 a month. I was taken aback at the request and said I didn't feel comfortable doing it. But I would like to feel my negative reaction was based on some kind of danger, rather than a vaguely uneasy feeling. I would think the OP would want to know that too,

CaroleF, you did exactly the rght thing. That's a ridiculous request, particularly not knowing the person. Make sure you have your network as secure as possible.

Or, on the other hand, tell him "sure, for $1,000.00 a month". ...

Yes, it's definitely possible. You should have your network password encrypted. Otherwise anyone with a phone or laptop can just access your connection if in range. And if they are viewing child porn, downloading music and movies, or any other of the illegal things, it will all be traced back to you! Hackers can access your network anyway, haha.

You should also get a program that allows you to see who is accessing your network at anytime. This software comes with some routers when you buy them. If you don't live in a home that has a base of over 10,000 sq. ft., then you don't need a really expensive router that boosts your range, haha. Most routers can spread out at 100 yards in any direction! You can check the range of your Wifi by the way. Just grab a laptop and walk around your neighborhood to see if you can still pick it up. You may be surprised at how many people are on your connection if you don't have it encrypted.

p.s. The neighbor that asked you to use your connection for only 10 dollars a month is a cheapskate. You must have a bad***** connection! He could get his own connection for only 5 dollars more a month.

If there is a lock on my network is that encryption or just a lock. I have an Apple macbook and don't have network sharing turned on. What more do I need to do?

The guy who asked me doesn't have a TV, so probably it would be way more than $5 for him to get Internet.

Um, I'm not to familiar with Macs. But if your connection is locked then it should be encrypted. But a little fyi: your connection is never fully encrypted from a hacker or someone of that nature, haha. But don't let me scare you. You should be good.
