As I have traveled quite a bit this year and been to many different cities in the US and can kind of get a feel:

Relative to most of the country, Houston (and Austin, San Antonio, DFW) are about an 10 out of 10.

Compared to a "normal" economic year, Houston is about a 6 or 7 if 2004-2006 were 8-9.

If oil had an extended downturn, Houston would suffer significantly. Maybe not like the 80's, but there are still many many good jobs tied to the industry.

I work in the oil industry, and I'm not hearing those rumors. I guess there could be some companies that are trimming some peripheral services/employees, but the conversations at my workplace have been more about the fact that there seems to be quite a bit of hiring going on. Temper that statement with the fact that some of what we hear is about movement from one company to another within the industry, and not necessarily creation of new jobs, but it definitely seems to be an improvement over what the trends in the industry were as recently as 6 months to a year ago.

I agree I'm also in the oil industry and I am not hearing rumours of any more large scale layoffs.

My buddy in trading at Chevron says the entire company is bracing for massive layoffs in the coming months along with their corporate reorganizing.
