I based my vote of "7" on Houston's percentile ranking in overall national unemployment rates of major cities. We're around 8.5% vs. a national average of 9.3%.

Just sayin'...

Ronnie

I'd actually agree with Ronnie. I was also thinking "7" in relative terms to the rest of the US currently.

I'm surprised that it would be ranked that low. Where else in the country would be ranked higher right now?

7 would be about right. We were among the last to hit the recession and it looks like we're among the first to come out. It's not over, but we're turning a corner. The oil run-up and crash in 2008 had a significant effect but wasn't on the same level as the one in the 80s. It's a testament to how the economy here has diversified since then.

Let's see how long it lasts as a 7. Obama's speech yesterday about NASA mentioned Florida a lot and Texas not at all. Teachers are getting laid off left and right. Also, there are tons of rumors that most of the big oil companies are about to lay off more.

Who said we were ranking? We're rating - from 1 through 10. The economy is doing decent but it's not a boom year. So even if we were the best economy in the country... we're the best of a bunch of mediocre economies.

Some people think he's out to screw Texas because he didn't win it in the '08 election but if that's the case, he's a bigger fool than anyone thought. Texas is maybe two or three election cycles away from becoming the mother of all swing states and, even in '08, he won something like 45 percent of the vote. That's close in traditional Texas terms for a presidential election where the GOP nominee will normally take 60-something or more percent.

I vote 10 because I have a job.

When I get laid off I'll vote 1.
