I was checking into Galveston area before deciding on Katy. I moved to Katy from California..and did some research. I tried to go far west as possible..due to the hurricane. We visited the Galveston area last summer and you can still see some wreckage from hurricane ike.

I love katy because we bought a house in an up and coming neighborhood..its not too crowded..but its just a matter of your own opinion...good luck

@ glorplaxy, no fangs here , i just wanted to let everyone know why we were going there... but really, i'd like to hear some of the negative things people have to say instead of just saying "galveston is bad"

Well, since you asked...

the number one complaint is that its ugly. there are some nice houses they manage to get put up between hurricanes in some parts but the majority of galveston is a bit...ghetto, especially away from the seawall or strand. almost 1/4th of Galveston lives below the poverty line and it shows..

and the water is bad. very bad... not that it's toxic but it's just ugly and there's a lot of seaweed. If you like it though then that's a matter of personal taste.

From what I've seen, the whole island island is full of damaged/abandoned houses, bums, drunk people, and tourists.

Aside from that, it really is a change from Houston. However, the water is beyond disgusting. I've never seen water so dirty in my life.

I have a relative who owns an old beach house near Crystal beach; I spend time there every now and thoroughly enjoy it. The water is refreshing and to me is beyond nice. His beach house is old but is going for over $320k and there are many others around there that surpass that amount many times over. However the beach near the seawall is very crowded and congested.

I like Galveston...as I stated earlier I love all the historic homes. The Island looked 100x better though before the storm surge killed so many of the trees. Overall, I think it is a pretty neat place...one of those places where time seems to have stood still (in many areas). I kind of like that it is not a trendy place.

The lack of trees and amount of proverty are really the worst of it I think.
