Recently there's been a lot of stuff in the Chronicle's business section about this proposed merger b/t Continental and United. If the two merged, one would have to leave its home. United is based in Chicago while Continental is (obviously) based here in Houston.

People up and down from Sheila Jackson Lee, Mayor Parker and Governor Perry are trying to convince United to leave. Texas is already VERY friendly to companies and Houston has been good to Continental (from what I can tell). The latest Chronicle article said that Mayor Parker has entered/started negotiations with the heads of Continental and United by offering to meet any incentive Chicago has offered. I think Houston could come up with some pretty compelling incentives in addition to that.

Do you think it's likely that A.) the merger will happen? and b.) United will leave Chicago for Houston?

City, state leaders push Continental to stay in Houston | Business | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/6978478.html - broken link)

Upon rereading it, it looks like United was going to be offered some pretty healthy incentives for moving its headquarters back into downtown Chicago (into Willis Tower no less). Could Houston match this incentive? I think we could. Granted, we might not have the likes of Willis Tower amongst us BUT, Continental's old headquarters is just sitting there...waiting for those blue lights to glow up top again...

The companies, at this point, have decided that if the merger goes through, the HQ will move to Chicago. Its up to Houston at this point to put together an offer/plan to keep it here. (if it goes through)

There's one thing Houston cannot match. It isn't Chicago.

If they do merge (I hope they don't), then they will move likely move to Chicago. I don't see United coming down here.

I don't think size and prominence plays a huge part in this situation.

History does. Unless they are bought out and dismantled by somebody else, United will never leave Chicago.

Looking bad for the old hometown.
