You can check out the following for "renters rights laws" in Texas:

As one myself, I can tell you that most Landlords will hold you accountable for your lease contract. You are responsible for paying the remaining rent owed on your lease. The relet fee is something entirely different. Paying this fee will not get you out of your contract, nor will it get you out of paying what you owe on the remainder of your lease contract.

A lot of apartment management will see that you did the right thing ( notice and re-letting fee), even though you broke the lease - others won't. It's better to be truthful because it's not just one lie, but two. You are going to also have to lie about where you have lived for the past 20 months. Clear it with your present landlord about future obligations and get it in writing.
