I'll be in Houston for several weeks for training (work-related), and wanted to know what there is to do around the Rice University area...any good restaurants/bars, etc. Also, anything I should know about safety-wise? Thanks!

Rice Village is relatively safe and has a number of bars/restaurants. I like the Gingerman. You also have access to the light rail if you want to go dowtown to an Astros game.

I second Oildog's comments. There is lots of stuff in rice village (bordered by rice, university, kirby, and greenbriar). You can also head north a little bit the area north of 59 up to westhiemer. There you will find star pizza, the chocolate bar, azuma sushi, churasco's, chuy's, and lots of shopping, plus the menil art gallery, and the parks around St. Thomas.

If you like tiny little weird dive bars, I highly recommend Valhalla on the Rice campus.

Under the Volcano is close to Rice Village, and it's one of my favorite bars in the city. It's at the intersection of Morningside and Bissonnet.

I second Benjy's as a good place for food.

Assuming you have access to a car there is no shortage of places to eat/drink. I’ll second the already mentioned Gingerman and Valhalla. TwoRows is not bad. Occasionally I go to Texadelphia for their odd take on a cheese steak. A little father out of the Village is Goode Company and I also like the Red Onion. You are not far from the light rail (street car) which can take you into town. If you get off at Ensemble/HCC you are right by the Continental Club which has live music. There are a couple of other restaurants and a bar nearby. If you go all the way down to the Main Street Square stop there is a bar called the Flying Saucer which has an excellent selection of beers.
The whole area is pretty safe, but I did have a coworker get mugged nearby. She was jogging and using headphones. Just pay attention to your surroundings like you would in any city and you will be fine.
