What would you think if Arizona's new and controversial immigration law was applied to the Houston area?

For those who don't know, the law basically states that police will have the right to question any one who they suspect is in the country illegally. The law also requires that immigrants carry special identification with them to verify their immigration status if needed. If the person does not have the proper ID, he can be detained until the true immigration status can be confirmed.

I'm not saying I support the law or am against it, but anyone who has spent enough time in Houston knows just how many illegal immigrants there are here. The Home Depot on Bellaire must have about 100 day laborers in the parkling lot on any given day and there are many more dispersed all throughout the area. In my area, I can think of at least two spots where they congregate in large numbers less than 3 miles away.

So do you think it would be good or bad for Houston? Discuss

I think it's unconstitutional and bad for every American.

Statements similar to these (bold) are made quite often on this forum, so I'm curious,... is this really a legitimate measure of whether or not we have an illegal immigration problem?

Not very many to answer your question but I doubt we have the same number of illegals from Canada as we do from Mexico.

That's not the point.

Why isn't it? If we have 50K illegal Mexicans in Houston and 250 illegal Canadians in Houston who do you think they're going to question more? How often have you seen a story about illegal Canadians looking for work in a Home Depot parking lot? How many illegal Canadians have killed HPD officers in the last 10... hell make it 100 years? How many illegal Canadians are currently locked up in Houston jails?

For the OP, I think it's a GREAT idea but I'd rather see it become a state wide TX law instead of just a Houston thing because that will just drive the problem to another part of the state.

If you were a dark Mexican-American you would not think this law was a great idea. Furthermore, why give Americans another reason to hate Texas? I laugh at these polls that say "70 percent of Arizona residents are for the law." Guess what? The state is 30 percent Hispanic. What does that tell you?

My wife is a dark Mexican-American woman. She is insulted by this law. Many people don't get this. I'm sure you would also be insulted if you were her because I know I would be. But that's what many of those that are so in favor of this legislation don't understand. It is an insult to a large group of persons, namely American citizens of Mexican/Central or South American decent who have darker skin tone.

First off, you're either an American or you're not an American, so I'll assume you mean a dark skinned American of Mexican descent. What in particular about the AZ law do you think would be the problem? Have you even read it?
