Why is Houston pronouced "HUGH stuhn" while the rest of the world says "HOUSE tuhn"?

Let's see what this conjurs up. And don't tell me it's the way Sam said it.

(..let's avoid "..umble" for the time being).

Just sayin'...

Ronnie

House-tuhn sounds weird and incorrect. Hew-Stun is more slick and sexier; it just sorta rolls off your tongue. I've noticed though that when I pronounce Houston; it sometimes sound like I'm saying "U-ston".

We didn't get hooked on phonics early enough...Texas public education sucks.

So maybe we should run around calling it HOWston and get shot by the locals.

PS- I'm thinking that's how old SAM pronounced his name, so it stuck....kinda like big things are 'Uge around here. OW, is just used when you slap skeeters.

See what I mean about the education around here? Can't read directions... Definately can't/won't take them.

Default House Dung?

Maybe Sam did not want it to rhyme. There is this guy in our building named Roger. No, not Roger, 'RO-JAY'. And the "J" is not pronounced like J, it's like "shzz". He's not French either, he's German. Go figure.

The Big Apple: Houston Street (Texas “Hew-ston/Heuston” or New York City “House-ton/Howston")

Because Houston street in NY is pronounced that way, so people assume Houston, TX should be as well.
