Alcon just celebrated the opening of it's new Monarch plant on WV Route 2 near Huntington. The plant will make cartridges that help insert intraocular lenses into the eye during cataract surgery. This is expected to add 300 new jobs to the area. The Swiss Ambassador, visiting for the opening, then toured Marshall University due to the Biotechnology research that happens there to possibly make some connections as Switzerland is well known for its Biotech research and its investment into US Biotech research. Great potential for both.
That's great news. Imagine how many eye operations it takes to support an operation of that magnitude. Since the Swiss are involved, will most of the products be sold in Europe?
Alcon's parent companies, Nestle and now mostly Novartis, are based in Switzerland. The products will be sold all over the world as the Huntington plant is the only one that produces the Monarch cartridge. The Monarch allows such a small incision to be made for cataract surgery that no sutures are required afterward. Pretty neat stuff.
