Hey I'm planning on relocating to the Huntington area and need advice on what are some good areas where I can rent a nice but affordable apartment.
I will be working between Kentucky and Ohio mainly so any area between Ashland and Huntington would be nice. I'm looking for areas where I can get good cell reception and can get fast internet at home. Advice?
Actually, if anyone knows any good areas (low crime, beautiful and calm atmosphere) in Ashland that would also help. I'm not set on Huntington but it just seems like a good city where there's lots to do and is up with the times.
Any other good information that you could give me is also welcome, Places to avoid, attractions, food & bars, etc.
The Southside of Huntington might be the first place to look based on your post. There are lots of apartments in the area that offer quick and easy access to Ritter Park, downtown, great restaurants, entertainment options and close access to the interstate for travel. The only drawback to apartments in this area is that many are older but the ones that I have been in have still been nice. You might also look closer to downtown as there are apartments in some of the buildings downtown and there are newer apartments closer to Marshall University.
Just about anything close to the park or close to the downtown area would likely suit your needs. Things closer to Marshall may be newer but you may want to steer clear of them if you aren't looking for the student atmosphere. They just built some new higher end apartments right off of the 29th Street exit of I-64 that you might like as well. Still just a little farther out but still convenient, there are some nice, newer apartments in Barboursville as well. I'm not too familiar with Ashland so I can't really speak about what's available there.
Here are some links that you might find helpful. The first one has an apartment rental guide and you may find that most helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll do my best to answer.
The biggest area to avoid in Huntington is the area from 16th Street/Hal Greer heading east on the south side of the railroad tracks. Most things close to the railroad tracks and right on some of the main routes tend to be a little more rundown as people usually don't want to live right on a busy highway. Most properties close to the Ritter Park, the Museum of Art, St. Mary's Medical center, off of Washington Blvd, etc are in great areas.
If there is a specific place that you have questions about, feel free to send me a message and I'll do my best to help.
