CAMC didn't make a "push" to buy Putnam General Hospital. Putnam General CLOSED. The State Hospital authority convinced CAMC to take it over, so the hospital reopened several days later under new management. If they hadn't done that, Putnam County would have been left without a hospital.

Thomas Memorial Hospital absorbed St. Francis Hospital when St. Francis was going to e closed if a buyer wasn't found. From what I can tell (from a few employees I know and their casual remarks), the merger has been handled in a way that makes sense. Administrative functions started being combined and merged together almost as soon as the papers were signed.

Thomas Hospital operates as a good, general-purpose hospital. If a patient presents with symptoms indicative of the need for specialized care that is better at CAMC, the patient gets an ambulance ride uptown.

Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital was started as a memorial to a WWII Congressional Medal Of Honor recipient. H. J. Thomas is buried at Sunset Memorial Park. They held a memorial wreath laying ceremony at his grave a few years ago on Memorial Day. If the hospital was built with funding from a foundation, it may be unlikely for it to be sold to a larger organization. Although there seems to always be some cooperation with CAMC, I've never seen a hint that there would ever be a merge take place.

I think eventually Cabell Huntington and St. Marys will be one entity with some specialty services operated at only one location. At CAMC (and what will probably happen in Huntington), OB, orthopedics, neurology, cardiac, and gynecology are examples of specialties that are only done at one location. Administrative functions, such as billing and Information Technology are unified across all CAMC entities. They even have the same menu in food services across the hospitals. I doubt that there will ever be a merge with Thomas Hospital Systems, although there may be some cooperative things happen in the future. There may be an opportunity for Marshall Medical students to do their residency at Thomas, making it more convenient for students from the Charleston area, for example.

By "push" I meant it in a physical sense in that they had progressed a little closer to the Huntington market. I could certainly envision, based on what I am hearing, a very strong partnership between CHH/SMMC/Marshall Health and the Thomas Health System. In fact, this already exists to some degree - CHH/Marshall sends some of its specialists to TMH certain days of the week. From what I have been told, Thomas Health System has floated an offer to CHH/Marshall Health to purchase their outpatient clinics because they are very strapped for cash at the moment and CHH is interested in taking the clinics off their hands. As far as the hospitals themselves, I doubt that we will see an outright merger/acquisition of the Thomas Health System by CHH but would not rule it out completely either. I think we are more likely to see an intimate partnership where Marshall residents will work and services will be expanded at the Thomas facilities, therefore eliminating the need for that "ambulance ride uptown" to CAMC, hence direct competition.

A new water trail opens on the Guyandotte. This really has the potential to grow if done right. If someone would create a business where you could rent a Kayak in West Hamlin and then drop it off in Huntington, that would be a step in the right direction.

We already knew this, but Black Sheep is moving to Pullman Square in the former Uno's space. I think this will turn out to be a good move for them and a big plus for downtown. Now, what do we think will move into their current location?

I've heard that they will retain their current location and it will be some sort of breakfast or chicken and waffles type of restaurant. That was just rumor though.

Nothing official has even been announced yet. I'd imagine they'll be open until about 11:00, maybe a little later.

Interesting. I'd be surprised if someone didn't buy them out, especially with them not commenting on the closing. The question now is who bought them out.
