Does anyone know if this project has started? Obviously, the last 5 months have put a damper on bars and such, but didn't know if the owners had started the work. The last time I was downtown, I forgot to look around and see if I could see any work being done or completed.
I noticed today that a lot of framing and what looks like a new brick wall has been built on top of the Jewelry/Cigar store building. I’d imagine they’ll have it done by the time the weather warms up.
Just wondering why we don’t have an upscale grocery store in our area? I live close to the park and there is not one grocery store available to shop in. I must travel to Barboursville to shop in a Kroger’s store the only decent and clean one out of all the ones in our area. What a shame there is not a Wegman’s, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods and the like. I remember when there was a Tradwell, Big Bear and even an A&P many years ago all located on Hal Greer Blvd. My husband says no one would shop the upscale stores because all everyone will eat in this area is cornbread and beans! Lol! I even went to the Kroger store in Barboursville and asked if they had any fresh basil in the produce and the kid said “what is that? Can you eat it”! Wow! You would think they would train there employees on what they carry in the produce Dept. Just venting and somewhat frustrated with the lack of grocery stores here.
Whole Foods requires the following before they'll locate a store in an area:
Typically, 200,000 people or more in a 20-minute drive time
25,000-50,000 Square Feet
Large number of college-educated residents
Abundant parking available for our exclusive use
Stand alone preferred, would consider complementary
Easy access from roadways, lighted intersection
Excellent visibility, directly off of the street
Must be located in a high traffic area (foot and/or vehicle)
We definitely need a new, nicer grocery store in the city. There has been talk of an Aldi on Hal Greer where the government housing was. I’d imagine nothing will go in there until construction is done on the road. The redevelopment of the old ACF property would be a great opportunity to bring in a new grocery store. It would also be a more convenient location for Marshall students. I’d love to see it happen.
