I was actually thinking about this the other day while driving along 64 and going past the Hal Greer exit. If you notice there are actually quite a few areas along I-64 (from West Huntington to Barboursville) that appear to have enough room for 3 lanes/side but are marked out by yellow lines. I'm assuming this was anticipated.

They might consider doing this to more of the roads in the city as well. Hal Greer is certainly less congested now. I have always wondered what they are going to do with downtown 4th ave if Huntington's population ever begins a strong rebound. There isn't much room to expand to more lanes after the renewal project.

I've noticed the markers in the median for this project for a couple of weeks now. I suspected that this is what they were doing. Hopefully this is just the beginning and they work quickly to get three lanes all of the way to Hurricane. Just from Hal Greer Blvd to 29th street is expected to take a year and a half though!

The road projects over the last 5 to 7 years between Hal Greer and 29th Street, the Norwood Road tunnel project and the bridge replacement over Darnell Road, were done with the future 6 lane expansion in mind.

The Interstates were built so they could be expanded to 6 lanes. For years now they've been expanding a section at a time and now I-64 is 6 lanes wide from Charleston west to the bridge between the Nitro and St. Albans exits and then back to six lanes quite a bit further. I think it goes into Cabell County.

[Of course, we all know they SHOULD have done this in Morgantown instead. ]

Mensaguy, you are right. We all know the traffic numbers are much higher in Morgantown than I-64 and thus justify the project going to Morgantown before Huntington.

I do hope that the DOH moves the traffic flow back to 2 lanes, eastbound, well before the 29th Street on/off ramp area.

I say this because the existing left side/median expansion road area around the 29th street exit, the part that is currently striped off, ends at the point where the 29th street eastbound on ramp meets the interstate. It would be a very bad idea to have 3 lanes merging back to 2 lanes at the same point new traffic is set to merge with the interstate. Take a look at google maps for a visual of what I am talking about.

Been there many times. My stepson lives near the 29th St. Interchange.
