HUNTINGTON -- On cooking asphalt the sound of wheels and wood rolling and clanking, along with the occasional thump, filled the parking lot of Harris Riverfront Park Sunday.
Dozens of local skaters turned out for Skate Day, a fundraiser for the new Huntington skateboard park expected to enter construction by late summer or early fall.
Sunday's event let local and regional skaters come try out some custom-built ramps, most of which will be sold at a silent auction during yet another fundraiser for the project later this month.
Construction on the City of Huntington’s skate park is officially underway!
City officials broke ground Tuesday on the project, which will be built
in three phases on the western end of Harris Riverfront Park. The first phase will cost $202,900.
No general fund dollars will be used to construct the first phase of the project. Funding came from state and federal grants and community donations, including a $5,000 donation from Mystic Metals in Chesapeake, Ohio. Council member Scott Caserta has spearheaded the project.
...about 80 percent of the concrete work for the first phase of the project has been completed since the groundbreaking in August, Kleppe said.
He said the first phase also includes grading and preparing the ground for the remaining construction.
The park is being built in three phases, and each phase will add 3,000 square feet to the park, Kleppe said. In total, he expects the entire park to cost about $500,000 to complete.
The first phase is a portion of the park's street course that is adjacent to the flood wall in the 800 block of the park.
It includes some ramps and obstacles tailored for use by skaters of all levels. The cost of the first phase is $202,900, and all of the funding for it has come from Community Block Grants, federal grants, the Tony Hawk Foundation and local donations from businesses and community members.
