When we moved here, we were not allowed to move alcohol; therefore, I need to restock my bar. The liquor stores I have found (ABC on University and another on 72 in Madison) seem very expensive. Can someone recommend the best place in Huntsville/Madison for liquor? Do I need to go to Tennessee to get decent prices?

thanks,

Marc

Why were you not allowed to move alcohol? That's very strange.
If you've noticed, in Alabama all liquor sales are controlled by the state via ABC stores. Those private liquor stores - they have to buy their stock from the ABC stores, and at not-much-reduced wholesale prices.

There are laws about how much liquor you can bring in from out of state. Woe to you if you get stopped and the police check your car. So....drive the speed limit and don't get stopped.

Welcome to the land of repression..... good luck on filling that liquor cabinet! ABC is expensive, and the private shops are insanely expensive (nearly 100% more on some items than back at home). One of things I hate the most about Alabama.

I'm moving down to the area this week and will miss the ability to buy liquor at the grocery store in St. Louis.

Are prices much cheaper in Tennessee? If so, any recommended liquor stores in Ardmore? How much can we "legally" bring across the border?

thanks,

Marc

If you were military or able to shop on the Arsenal I'd recommend there, but I'd guess you aren't...

You can buy beer and wine at the grocery store.
For liquor, you have to go to the state store or a private retailer.

Oh don't get me started on the ABC. Avoid giving them your money at all costs. They are slime. Buy in Tennessee or have a buddy who can buy at the RSA Class VI store help you out.

Can civilian military employees who work on the arsenal buy on the arsenal or do you have to be enlisted? I have always wondered how that works.

Only if you are active, reserve, or retired military or a spouse or dependent of active, reserve, or retired military. Veteran status alone does not count. My mother-in-law who is not even a US citizen can shop there because she is the spouse of a retired soldier. However, my wife and I as mere veterans who did not complete 20 years cannot. It's kinda strange really. I also happen to be a vendor at the Class VI and can attest to the prices being MUCH cheaper than in town. And the selection is better. You could always join the Army I suppose.
