I didn't see anything om the link that says you can not have a raffle. I know I have bought tickets for raffles for a TV in Marshal county for the schools.

The AG site says it's illegal for non-profits to hold raffles:

Quote:
Can a non-profit organization conduct a raffle to raise funds in Alabama? No. (Code of Alabama §13A-12-20, Article IV § 65, Const. of Ala 1901)
Alabama Attorney General - FAQs and Tips (http://www.ago.state.al.us/contact_faqs.cfm - broken link)

I don't think schools pay any attention to this rule, because lots of booster clubs and so forth do hold raffles.

The correct answer in any case is to consult an attorney and don't take legal advice from any of us here.

Years ago, when Charlie Graddick was attorney general, the newspaper I worked for ran a short article in the newspaper about a raffle for something - it was very small, like a quilt, to benefit a local club.

His office quickly sent a letter telling us that raffles were illegal in Alabama. I can only assume he sent one to the club, too. Not that they didn't happen, but our newspaper would not publicize them as a raffle - we called in a "drawing."

But the last few years I've seen raffles openly publicized as that - buy a ticket and get a chance to win something. So I can only assume the attorney general's office is ignoring more of these.

But I like the idea of using the word "drawing" - such a cool pun...lol..but I think we can get the same result doing the silent auction..so...but still love drawing....
