You will need to take a drive from Somerville to find things to do, although that's a beautiful area. It's a very small town. In Decatur, there's a cool bug museum (Cook's Pest Control), skating rink, indoor play area (Off the Walls). Huntsville has Constitution Hall Park, a hands-on science museum, Space and Rocket Center and I'm sure other things for young 'uns. Welcome and enjoy!

Southlander,

Can you tell me where the indoor play area (Off the Walls) is located. Do you have an address or google map link? Thanks

Off the Walls, 1000 Beltline Road SW, Decatur, 256-353-8800. It's in a strip shopping center with Fred's, Aldi Supermarket, several other stores. At the front of the shopping center in a freestanding building is Hollywood Video.

Thanks Southlander, I guess I should of first asked, what kind of play area is "Off the wall"? Is it playground, skateboard, or indoor bike park? Is it private or a free public park. Thanks.

Oh, of course, I'm sorry. It's like "play in the balls," kind of like a super-duper McDonald's play area. One of the fun things I heard was the Velcro suits that you put on and then go run and jump against a wall of the hook side of Velcro! It apparently appeals to kids in a range of ages. I haven't been there, just repeating what I've heard (my kids are grown!). It's private; there is an admission fee.

Since we are on the subject of Somerville, why is land in this area so cheap? Somerville, Lacey Springs, and Eva have very pretty mountains, yet many flat areas north and west of Huntsville have higher land prices. Is it because Morgan county has loose building codes and relaxed restrictions. I noticed most of Morgan county is zone agriculture. To me, Morgan county being so close to Madison county and Huntsville, land prices should skyrocket in the future....perhaps during the BRAC buildup. Any thoughts?

Many reasons...the only way into Madison County from that area is 1 bridge over the Tennessee River on U.S. 231 (well, one going east and one going west, both 2 lanes). Huntsville schools in the SE area are rated quite high, WAY over Morgan County Schools. The nearest high school is Brewer High, at Somerville (actually Florette), quite a drive, although the county runs buses (12 miles from Florette to Lacey's Spring). That area also has a number of caves, so you should probably have that checked out if you build a house. Also there is no sewer service out that way, too rural. To get to a "regular" grocery store or Wal-Mart, you would be going back into Huntsville.
It is beautiful, though.
