A History of Early Settlement: Madison County before Statehood, 1808-1819 (review)
Harry M. Joiner
Athens State University

"...The second article, "Indian Creek and Western Madison County," has nine maps showing the location of the first families in Madison County. This includes David Capshaw (Capshaw Mountain and town), Elisha Rainbolt (Rainbow Mountain), William Martin (Martin Road), William Patton (Patton Road), William Slaughter (Slaughter Road), William Weeden (Weeden Mountain), and Andrew Wall (Wall-Triana Road). We learn that Triana is the nation's only town named for the sailor on Columbus's ship who first saw Land in the New World..."

From page 30 of Dex Nilsson's book, "Why Is It Name That?":

"I spent a lot of time looking for the person named Wall in the name of this north-south county road, until the folks in the Madison Engineering Department told me there was no such person. The road has its name because it runs between the communities of Wall, Tennessee, and Triana, Alabama."

That makes no sense sense Wall-Triana changes it's name at the TN/AL border to Old Baptist Road. Furthermore, where is Wall, TN. Google, Bing or GE can't find it.

I'm pretty sure you're right, i thought the same thing when I tried and failed to find a Wall, TN. That said, maybe Wall was little more than a rural "crossroads" community with no paper trail and little more than a church, ball field, and maybe a lodge?

I picked up Nilsson's book at a consignment book booth at the old antique mall on Hughes, and it has been accurate on local names, as far as I've been able to discern. (Twinbrook Communications, Isbn 0-9629170-6-0)

I thought citing Nilsson's opinion might trigger memories in other members.

Default Wall family in Madison County

I believe the answer is that the "Wall" family gave the name to the Wall-Triana road; their land holdings were in what is now the very north-west part of Madison County (Range 1, Township 1), which is the northern extent of Wall-Triana Rd before crossing into TN. The documentation is available from the book referenced in y8tiger's post " A History of Early Settlement: Madison County before Statehood, 1808-1819" , which is is found online at :

http://huntsvillehistorycollection.o..._Statehood.pdf

On pgs 35 and 40 of the book, it mentions that "Allen Walls" was the administrator (executor) of a very large estate in 1849, and likely his father (William Walls) had been involved in the estate as early as 1827

Probably Dan Nilsson was unaware of that when he published his book in 2005- The book mentioned by y8tiger- "A History of Early Settlement..." came out later in 2008, and those documents may not have been available to him when researching it. I'd discount the story from the Madison Engineering Dept of there being a community named "Wall, TN" as just folklore. (It's a good guess in the absence of any other information- but in this case the named Wall family would be stronger evidence. )
