My last job was almost 16 years ago. I've been mostly a homemaker. Most of my jobs were fast food, with a few other things mixed in. The economy is bad, and my husband has not been getting to work enough. It's getting close to getting desperate. I have been applying for jobs online since last September. I haven't had one single callback. This week, I started applying in person, with nothing changing. In fact, a lot of places say they don't have any applications, and/or you have to apply online. Ugh! I'm getting where I'm about willing to take anything, any days, any hours, although, my husband really wants me to work Monday through Friday, day hours. I realize that's probably close to impossible. My stepdaughter says I will never get a job by applying online. So what do I do next? I'm feeling pretty depressed and hopeless about it all.

Applying online is not going to work for many jobs. It is going to be hard to find a fast food job working only days and no weekends. Min wage and you will be lucky to get 40 hours unless you are an asst mgr. Have you checked out any temp places? You might be able to get a job sitting, doing housework or helping an older person.

You might try going to Qualitest out on Moore's Mill Rd. I believe they've recently done some hiring and they do have a lot of positions that don't require any specialized training.

The McDonalds on University and Perimeter Parkway has had a sign out for a couple of weeks but states that must work weekends. Texas Roadhouse on corner of University and Jeff Road has a big banner saying "Now Hiring."

Even banks are no longer 9 to 5 jobs. You might apply at a temp agency, just to get some experience back under your belt even if the pay is minimum wage. Someone who has been out of the workforce for a long time is a greater risk to an employer.

Hobby lobby is hiring. They pay 9 dollars an hour and Sundays off. They might be flexible with your hours.

As a homemaker, you have learned skills: you understand budgeting and time/scheduling at the least. Did you do any volunteer work - such as organizing a PTA meeting, book fair, etc. These are marketable skills and the volunteer work counts. You can get references from teachers/principal for the PTA/school work. Did you assist as a teacher aide? Your 16 years weren't wasted; you were productive, so include those. As a former small business owner, I can tell you that I valued those skills you learned and hired many mothers returning to work.

There are free online courses to help you learn some of the new computer programs: quickbooks, excel, word - get super proficient in them - check out your library for course material. You can type, you just proved it - so learn/understand data entry.

And I second and third the temps agency - but learn some of the programs first - they will test you and that helps your credibility in getting hired in an office.

What about jobs in:

hospitality - (hotels) - you can start anywhere - cleaning, reception (you got some of those skills working with the PTA/teachers/volunteering), etc.

hospital/medical office - secretary, reception, scheduling, filing

banking was already mentioned

Yarn/fabric stores - teaching sewing/crafts

Take it from this former retail hiring manager. If you are applying at fast food or retail places and are even hinting that you want Monday - Friday hours only, that is why you are not getting call backs. We managers used to actually chuckle at those. We didn't even call back applicants that said they "prefer Sundays off". No one wants to work on Sundays, especially in the Southern Bible Belt, but Sunday has become, unfortunately, sometimes an even busier business day than Saturday. Everyone wants to go shop and eat after church! That is when the most help is needed in those kinds of industries.

I second the recommend to try applying at some banks. Although many of those positions these days are part-time or what they call peak-time, they can sometimes turn into full-time jobs. If you have bad credit though, you probably won't get in. Banks check credit, and also social network pages these days.

Thanks for all the replies and good ideas. Most of the applications I've put in lately I have said I'll work any days, any hours. My last job was at Krystal's for three years and I did work Monday through Friday only, part-time. I almost wish I could get it back. I'm sure things have changed, but a lot would still be the same. My son has suggested a few temp staffing agencies. I will try them this week. What about West that is always advertising in the newspaper? Anybody have any experience with them?

I've been seeing a lot of opening ads for Lowe's, granted this is on Indeed.com.

My wife is in a similar situation. We're hoping that when the kids go back to college that some stuff will open up.
