Community: Huntsville Police Department’s DUI Unit July 4th Holiday Blitz Period
Hi xxx xxxxxxxxx,
Huntsville, Alabama (July 2, 2012) The Huntsville Police Department reported today that it will be proactive in enforcing Alabama DUI Laws over this July 4th holiday period. Thanks to grant enforcement money provided by the Northeast Alabama Traffic Safety Office (N.A.T.S.O.) Huntsville Police Officers will be setting up traffic safety checkpoints and encouraging everyone not to drink and drive.

Using crash data from the State of Alabama Critical Analysis Reporting Environment (C.A.R.E.) data program, the Huntsville Police Department’s DUI Traffic Task Force will be setting up announced and unannounced random safety check points. When stopped at a safety checkpoint, citizens will be asked for a current driver’s license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration. Additionally, seat belt compliance for both the drivers and all passengers will be checked.

Locations for these holiday checkpoints through July 6th will be:

• Winchester Road at Moores Mill Road
• Memorial Parkway and Meadowbrook Road
• Drake Avenue at Chasewood Drive
• Hwy 72 at Chapman Mountain
• Bob Wallace Avenue at Leeman Ferry Road
• Andrew Jackson Way at Ward Avenue
• Jordan Lane (SR-53) at University Drive
• Old Monrovia Road at Providence Main For full details, view this message on the web.

It is bad enough that drivers don't know how to drive through a traffic circle; now they are going to put up a roadblock at the circle?!?!?! Crazy.

This is the first place that I've been too that provides where the road blocks checkpoints . I don't drink and drive but if I did I would just avoid these stops.... Its confusing to me that they make this public before hand.

I've seen it done in other places.

1) If you are driving impaired, you probably aren't going to have the presence of mind to avoid the spots.
2) Generally, they don't publish all of the locations.

Publishing the locations might make someone use a designated driver. And don't begrude the HPD taking the effort to protect yourself and others from drunk drivers. This press release also lets us non-drunk drivers that these will be streets that are potentially safer than others, for what that's worth.

Re: The traffic circle. Yes, I'm sure that it'd be safer with drunk drivers, huh?

Well, I'm not a drinker. At all... but I will avoid those places because I've been caught in those before and they're often, not quick.
Causing them to use a designated driver is a good point tho.

Having relatives in the HPD, I know a large part of it is the revenue from folks not carrying their insurance cards.

My husband and I were stopped at a checkpoint a few years back. Neither of us were drinking, but it was very late and we were tired. The officer asked for my husband's license and then asked how old he was. Hubby got a little blindsided and drew a blank. Needless to say, the officer started yelling at him and forced him to take a breathalizer test. We were both pretty shook up about it but luckily my husband passed the test and were sent on our way. The cop was pretty brutal
though, wow!
