I am looking for a rental that allows pets and is preferably under $650 a month. I have been actively searching since July and am having a hard time finding options in my price range (that aren't in sketchy areas of town). I am recently separated and working through a divorce so my need to keep my overhead low is imperative.

I have seen what look to be privately-held condos and duplexes in the Five Points area but don't know how to get in touch with the owners/agents.

I did find a place on Belcrest Drive on Monte Sano that fits in my budget, but they look older and perhaps run-down. I have a friend who lives on Monte Sano and she loves it because of the community (safe and friendly but also private).

I'm not adverse to something quaint or old, but I do need certainty that I won't be sharing the place with rodents or insects or somewhere that makes me feel unsafe.

I would like to be no further out than 20 minutes from town (Huntsville/Madison).

Any suggestions?

Too bad you aren't in B'ham, got just the place...

Don't dismiss the rental agencies out of hand. They handle a lot of individual places. For 10%, having an agency do the work is a no-brainer.

Have you searched the rentals at ValleyMLS?

I got my rental through ValleyMLS... which then led me to Rosenblum Realty - which acts as the property manager.
Some of these realty companies don't just sell or help properties.
They also manage properties.

There are no out-of-pocket costs for you. The landlord gives them a 5-10% cut from the monthly rent. The rent is not necessarily more expensive just because there is a 3rd party.

I have checked with Rosenblum (they actually manage the little place on Monte Sano) as well as Exit Realty. I check MLS, craigslist and several other websites literally every day.

I guess what I was hoping was to hear from someone who knows someone who knows someone...you know? I just found out that a friend of mine is moving from her little Five Points home so I am going to go check it out after work.

It seems sometimes that being in the right place at the right time produces pretty good results so I was hoping that posting on here would possibly lead to something that I hadn't seen yet. Thanks for everyone's input thus far!

Do you have access to the Arsenal? I heard that they have more homes available than active duty families to live in them so they rent to civilians. My guess is that they would be pretty affordable.

IMO you are not finding a decent rental for $650 in Huntsville or Madison

Maybe in the county....

FWIW that will get you a nice Mobile home on a large lot in the county

PLEASE be careful using search tools like Craigslist. MANY rental scams running amuck on there.

I don't want to get too far out from Research Park (gas mileage) but country living isn't bad. Also, I've kind of figured out the scams/legit ads on Craigslist and can determine which ones to avoid. I did luck up on a condo rental in Madison Towne Centre. Anyone have any experience there?
