I'd have to agree with buffer, 13 over.....kinda deserve to get a ticket. everyone knows the accepted rule is 9.99999999 over is safe. Minus schools zones, holidays, madison cops...etc....

Call the number on the back of the ticket and ask if the county or traffic enforcement entity that wrote the ticket offers a defensive driving course. You have to meet certain conditions to be eligible for the class but if you are eligible you will pay a reduced fine and the ticket will not be filed and made available to your insurance company (biggie). The course costs about $30 and you do have to attend a single session for about 2 to 3 hours to get the reduced fine, etc. Some counties allow you to take the course in your local area but that probably varies by county and ticketing agency (local PD, Alabama State Troopers, etc.)

Just pay The Man.

As for the classes, here in HSV, if you can get your school thing commuted here, the class is great. I had it back in 2010 and it was a meh, time-waste. But the old dude who did my 2013 class this last winter was great. Lots of info, stuff that's actually useful.

The days of the bloody-concrete scare videos seems to be over. Now it's more about car physics and the dangers of passive aggressive douchebags.

Edited to add: The class can be audited, aka gone to w/o getting a ticket first, in case anyone feels the need, or the need to make their teen driver go.

A commercial driver caught with a radar detector will lose his commercial license. Just a fun little fact. DOT don't mess around.

I have found radar detectors to be near useless these days. Being alert, using common sense, and knowing which podunk little redneck towns use the 4 lane highway that happens to pass through as income helps (New Hope and Owens Cross Roads on 431, Gurley and Paint Rock on 72). When you get a ticket from one of these speed trap towns, don't pay the ticket ahead of time. Go to court on your assigned day and try to beat it or hope the cop has already quit or been fired since they don't usually last long anyway and it will be dismissed. If nothing else, you at least help clog up their court system with speed trap ticket cases and it irritates the judge as well as actually costing them money in court time. Other than that, just pay it and move on.

DJ,

Why do you say that?

Recently I drove to Houston & back and I found the radar dectator really helped. Even if I was not speeding it helped me to be aware of what's going on. You cannot expect me to know all the speed traps from here to Houston. If only I avoided one ticket I pay for a radar dectator several times.
