Quarry fight not over - Huntsville News | WAAYTV.com and ABC 31: Local News

John Harrison, the President of the Eastern Madison County Civic Association says his group’s fight to keep Vulcan Materials from opening a rock quarry on Gurley Mountain is far from over. The group, and hundreds more from Eastern Madison County, voiced their concerns about health and economic risks at a meeting with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, but despite the public input, the state agency granted Vulcan materials a permit. Trucks began work on the site, which is located on Highway 72, this past Friday.

"We see this as harmful and injurious and devastating to our homes and our children and our health," said Harrison. He says despite the fact that Vulcan has their permit; there are still things that can be done to protect the people of his community.

Somebody needs to remove the word "devastating" from the language. It seems to have usurped by idiots.

devastate (ˈdɛvəˌsteɪt)

—vb
1. to lay waste or make desolate; ravage; destroy
2. to confound or overwhelm, as with grief or shock

[C17: from Latin dēvastāre, from de- + vastāre to ravage; related to vastus waste, empty]

Grissom High School relocation may move forward at new site | al.com

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Plans to relocate Grissom High School to a site off of Weatherly Road are moving forward, but with a twist.

The school district has been contemplating rebuilding the school on a 60-acre site owned by Hylis Inc., a company owned by James and John Hays. The relocation of the school hit a roadblock, however, when Alabama's state archaeologist and a local group, Tennessee Valley Archaeological Research (TVAR), stated that the property was part of a tract including up to five ancient Native American archaeological sites, at least one of which contains human remains.

On Thursday, the board learned that the Hays family has offered the district a new, larger piece of land just south of the previous location - at no additional cost.

How much time, effort and money are these people going to waste trying to fight this rock quarry? It has already been approved and is in operation. Even if by the small chance they were to get a local ruling to shut it down, Vulcan will file suit, an injunction will be put in place and it will be in court for years and in the end will then most likely be allowed to continue to operate anyway. I can't see any local government stupid enough to throw millions of dollars in court and attorney's fees at this and if individuals throw their personal money at it they are insane. Gurley already faced bankruptcy trying to fight Vulcan and was only saved by a judge placing a stay on the judgement. In my opinion, the stay should be lifted and Vulcan should be allowed to attach all of Gurley's assets for pulling their stunts.

Gurley rock quarry bill hits avalanche of opposition | al.com

The Senate bill would prohibit a new rock quarry, concrete plant, or asphalt plant from locating within 2.5 miles of a school in rural Madison County.

The bill was opposed in the public hearing by Vulcan Materials, the Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama Road Builders Association.

<...>

The bill would only affect new operations. Johnson said the legislation would not make the Gurley quarry go away since drilling is already ongoing. However, it would stop an asphalt or concrete plant from locating near the site.

Johnson said the plants often locate by the quarries to minimize freight costs.

The committee did not vote on the bill. Its outlook appears bleak with only four meeting days remaining in the legislative session.
