Wife's 2yr agreement with ATT is just about up, so I'm looking for options. Her current one is $85/month for voice + data, which I'm guessing is pretty steep. That came with a phone, but now she wants a new phone (an iPhone).

What's my best (affordable) option? Maybe buy a used/refurb iPhone, and then search for a less expensive and no contract plan?

Consumer cellular is a great company and has the cheapest rates. We pay $60 per month for two iPhones that do all we need to do: texting, telephone, internet.

It's all about coverage. Verizon has the best coverage in this area.

I have Straight Talk for $45.00 a month everything. The phone I have uses Verizon however, other phones use AT&T. It is a no contract phone but you do have to buy your phone. They do now have Iphones although I don't know anything about how well they work with Straight Talk.

Straight Talk seems like a good deal if you happen to choose a phone that works on the CDMA Verizon towers. It depends on the phone you get, and the MVNO's only offer older generation smartphones. I've also heard the MNO's throttle data for MVNO's such as Straight Talk. I just switched from Verizon the T-mobile for $50 a month with unlimited talk, text and 500 MB of 4G-ish data. Much cheaper for me. However, Verizon has the fastest data and most coverage if you want to pay for it.

I'm currently with Verizon for 3 more days. I've been happy with everything but the price. I'll be switching to Ting. It runs on Sprint and it's super cheap for what my family uses. You only pay for what you use, which in my case is not a lot.

Sprint coverage sucks around here. I have been a Sprint user for 13 years and will be ditching my SERO employee plan next month in favor of Verizon, simply due to coverage. There is no point in $50 unlimited data, text and voice if it can't be used...

If you use a cell phone rarely, it is hard to beat https://www.pagepluscellular.com/ Their super-basic plan has me paying $10 every three or four months. It uses Verizon network.

I should also note that Ting allows free voice roaming on Verizon if Sprint services goes out. The only downside with these prepaid or paygo plans is you have to provide your own phone, but that's not a big downside for me.

I've noticed that Verizon's coverage is spotty outside of Huntsville.
