Madison County probably has a higher density of tech workers but not sure if it beats ATL for shear numbers.

Yes, Madison County has one of the highest concentrations of engineers/tech jobs in the country. A story about this was actually just on the news yesterday. Madison County, Alabama is fourth in technology jobs behind the three counties in silicon valley California. Atlanta doesn't even make the list. Here is a graph showing the number of jobs by circle size and then there is an indexed list below. This list was just released two days ago: America's Top 25 High-Tech Hotspots - Richard Florida - The Atlantic Cities

I occasionally go to HUNTUG meetings at Intergraph. This is a group for computer professionals. Microsoft pays a lot more attention to Birmingham since they have their district office there.

Huntsville is still relatively unknown outside Alabama compared to Birmingham and Mobile. Part of it is because before 1960 Huntsville was a pretty small town. It didn't gain any recognition until Wernher von Braun brought the space program here. Now as that era has passed into history Huntsville will have to gain recognition in other ways.

I disagree. Before I moved here from out west I'd say at least half of the people knew where Huntsville was when I told them that's where I was moving. One person graduated from UAH, two people sent their kids to space camp, a couple of people still come here regularly on TDY trips, one person is familiar with MSFC, etc. Huntsville is obviously more well known to people in NASA and DoD, but it's not unknown to others as well. And while Birmingham may be better known due to its size, I'd actually say more people knew about HSV than Mobile.

I was talking about people in general across the United States. Most people have heard of Nashville, Birmingham, and Atlanta but if you asked them about Huntsville I bet most people would not. In the past Huntsville got its recognition from the Space Program and the the lunar missions but there is not much going on now besides the Space Station. How many people would connect Huntsville to the Space Station anyways. Most people probably have heard of Space Camp but how many know that it started in Huntsville? I am saying that Huntsville is not unknown. I am saying that compared to other cities in the region it still has a ways to go as far as name recognition. BTW, I moved to Huntsville out of a fluke. I was bored where I lived and a friend just happened to be moving here. I knew about Huntsville and MSFC only because I had a lot of interest in the Space Program. Other than that I knew about as much about Huntsville, AL as Huntsville, TX. I originally came from Illinois. Mobile had a much bigger name recognition than Huntsville.
