Since vermin seem to be a favored topic, I have a question for the board. Has anyone seen black bear in north Alabama?

I was hunting in Stevenson this winter and a buddy said he saw one at a distance. I still believe he was telling a tall tale!! I've gone bear hunting in east Tennessee and they rarely come out in winter months.

The big question for me is if they are here, can we shoot em?

I've never seen one here, but I'm sure there are some out there. Here's an article from a couple of years ago.

Black bears are returning to North Alabama; expect more, experts say | al.com

My inlaws lived in Northwest Florida (Navarre) and had a black bear that roamed their neighborhood.....and they were not out in the sticks, they lived along the East River in a subdivision.

Excellent! Thanks for the link. The article mentioned the county we were in so maybe my friend is not telling a "big foot" story.

There was one killed in Cantonment a few years ago because it kept getting into the trash at an apartment complex. There have also been a couple to get hit by cars near Mobile.

It sure seems like north Alabama would have more than we have down here though.

Maybe coyotes are tired of getting a bad rap - they're now wearing bear disguises. Hey, it's possible - just look at those cows trying to convince us to eat chicken.

they are not that uncommon in south Alabama especially Baldwin county, and it is a protected species which means leave them alone.
if you see one report it here:

http://www.alabamablackbearalliance.org/

Alabama’s black bear (Ursus americanus) population was once rich across the entire state. Today, the majority are confined to the forested swamps of Alabama. Reports have shown bears have breeding populations in Baldwin, Clarke, Mobile and Washington counties. There have been some observational reports in other areas of the state. The black bear species that we usually see in Alabama is the Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus).
