I've been watching the Weather Channel off and on for the last 5 hours. You Alabama folks be safe down there, this storm is nasty. This system covers several states. Varying damage from a couple small towns west of Omaha, lots of damage in Quapah, Oklahoma, ditto the towns north of Little Rock, southern Missouri, and more.

What kills me is huntsville and Madison city schools won't just play it safe like the rest of the systems. Now I have to wait till 10 or so for them to tell me wha I need to do to get my kids home and fed while still working myself.

Was interesting this A.M. We live in an area that for whatever reason tends to get mammtus cloudsin severe weather. We also hear a lot of wind noise from above the trees compared to other areas - similar to the noise hurricanes in Florida can have. This morning the noise was intermittent and repetitive, not quite freight train like and then quiet, but along those lines. If I had to imagine what was going on it sounded like a layer of wind/atmosphere was repeatedly being sheared into jelly rolls. It lasted for at least fifteen minutes. There probably is some scientific explanation, but just found it strange and wanted to note it.

We've just been upgraded to an 8 on the TORCON index. Stay safe everyone!

James Clemons is opening their gym at 2:00 as a shelter. Pets are welcome as long as they are crated. In the event the city loses power, Madison police will sound their sirens to notify citizens of a tornado warning.

Well, it's all over for now.

For information purposes, from the Hazel Green and Meridianville area the closest big shelter is the Flint River Baptist church's basement, which they open to everyone once we have a tornado warning. The entrance is at the back of the building. I've not been but I did see cars going in when it was about to get rough in Hazel Green.

We did what I figured we would if things got rocky, we loaded up the cats and dog and went to my mother-in-law's house. It's not that she has a shelter, it's just she's off Shields road, well south of where the tornado that got Athens track was. From the look of the radars (plural since I do Uverse multi-view of 19, 31, 48, and The Weather Channel) it was going to come right over us and TWC was saying it had debris in it. Hung out with the mom-in-law for about an hour and came back. In my yard, only one weeping willow branch fell. However, a friend from church actually can't get back to his house due to so many downed trees blocking the road.

And I have to say, if you were watching The Weather Channel and noticed the gal at the computer. Just a little while ago they started talking to her directly, her name is Sarah. And she controlled all the data coming in. She's my hero bigtime.

I really wish the local weather people would get the debris indicator. That is the true test of whether you should high tail it, imo.

Just got through watching weather channel and agree that Sarah was pretty sharp. Also have been watching BRC out of B'ham, don't know what Bessemer got, but B'ham dodged a bullet.

They either have one or have access to one because they frequently referred to it. I'm talking about the three Huntsville stations - WAAY, WAFF, WHNT.

More bad weather expected tomorrow...stay alert out there.
