Wow, I didn't even realize that was still there. Surprised they survived as long as they did.

The new Wal Mart on South Parkway opened last week....

Great, another abandoned building

Isn't that the only remaining K-Mart in the area?

AFAIK, yes. Last one. I was just in there this past weekend. I actually can stay sane shopping in there, unlike Walmart. I found some activewear that I liked. I can't say that about walmart.

There are still K Marts in Decatur, Athens, Albertville, Florence, Cullman, Muscle Shoals. None in Scottsboro.
I didn't realize that was the last one in Huntsville.

It's too bad. I like going to KMart sometimes, just as a relief from WalMart and Target. Sometimes their prices are better on the same brands. Their toy department, especially at Christmas, is better and less picked over (because they have a LOT fewer customers!). I used to LOVE going to their garden department in the spring and Christmas decorations areas.
The Decatur store used to be dirty all the time, but the last couple of years has been much, much cleaner - certainly cleaner than WalMart.

Kmart was slowly dying ten years when they bought Sears. They thought that Sears' good reputation would help it. It didn't. Kmart's biggest problem is that they haven't been able to compete with Walmart. They have no chance of surviving if they can't figure our how to do that.

I don't see any way out for Kmart. It would take a serious rebranding and reinvention of itself to overcome its negative image. If they were smart, they would just kill Kmart now and work on building Sears back up. Sears has a chance due to their Craftsman tool and Kenmore appliance reputation but even those areas are now starting to suffer serious sales declines. If something doesn't happen soon, both Kmart and Sears may be completely gone in the next 5 years.

Agree 100%, save for that 5yrs is too optimistic.

I just hope Craftsman is sold at a local store or even ala MAC or Snap On.

As long as I can get them.

Grainger and Ace Hardware sell Craftsman tools. I'm pretty sure the Craftsman brand will live-on regardless of what happens to Sears/KMart.
