Since we spent a good deal of time in the woods in FL, Mo already knew about spiders, snakes and scorpions (what to do, what NOT to do) but the big scary we had to discuss here was black bears and big cats...and playing possum. Not that I expect a bear to wander in to our back yard, but it has happened in the area where I grew up - similar, encroached environment.

33458 - don't play possum with a black bear - they'll eat anything - even dead possum.

With Black Bears, playing dead is not a viable option... If you are physically attacked, don't play dead with a black bear.

Yeah - how the rules have changed! I just Googled and everybody and their brother now says Pepper Spray "done right" -- but no possum anymore - which was THE advice years ago. And not that many years ago, either. Heck - again just in North Carolina at some Bear exhibit last year...

Now I get to revisit this with my daughter...great...

Remembering the story a few years ago about some housewife chasing a black bear out of her yard by banging pots and pans...that had to be a very special day for her.

I've never heard of any bears in Alabama. Not saying it's impossible...I just never heard of any.

Watchable Wildlife Species in Alabama

(The dutch-oven wielding woman was in a suburb of N.J. or something...)

I can't imagine that you'd ever see a bear or a big cat in Alabama. I've done a lot of hiking in N. Ala., plus we lived way out in the country for awhile. I've seen lots of snakes & bugs. My least favorite animal from N. Alabama is the cave cricket. They aren't dangerous at all, but they were always all over the basement when I went there at night. I enjoyed your blog! Monte Sano is a great place. It is such a wonderful way to (easily) get out of the city.

I wonder if Black Bears will creep back into AL? The northeast corner of the state is not all that far from black bear habitats in the Blue Ridge of North Georgia or the Cherokee forest in TN. I'm sure they used to live all over this area. They have made a real comeback in the Northeast, they even occassionally show up in the outer suburbs of NYC and Boston.

Funny how the thread went from zennjenn's blog to black bears.
