Dijkstra,

I've known you on this board over 6 years now and I know you are not a racist nor have you made a racist statement here that I am aware of. I think OP is using this to deflect attention away from himself. I would not take his accusation seriously.

You learn really quick to not even bother arguing with them. Take it from me, this thread will just go round and round in circles....as it frankly already is. Best just to roll eyes and move on. You won't win (or you may, but he won't stop).
I took a Philosophy/Ethics class. A few years later they changed it to strictly an engineering ethics class.

At any rate, I quite enjoyed the class. Philosophy, Logic, and Mathematics are closely tied. Philosophy ties analytical reasoning at a broader scope than just Mathematics.

For example, Descarte was both a mathmetician( Cartesian coordinate system ) and a philosopher ( I think therefore I am ).

Galileo, Pythagoras, and Plato were philosophers and mathematicians was well.

I always love how liberal arts departments claim engineers need to take their electives to be more well rounded, but you never see engineers demanding liberal arts take courses in thermodynamics to be more "well rounded".

You will overwhelm the Liberal Arts Majors just on the math alone. They probably did not even take trigonometry back in high school, let alone the calculus in college, let alone the differential equations, let alone variational vector & tensor analysis.

There is something definitive & concrete about math that is comforting. It makes you believe that there is an order & discipline in the universe.

In math where 1 + 1 = 2
In philosophy where 1 maybe the loneliest number....

Doesn't every college student need a certain # of units in math and science? I know I did. I had to take lower division units in all subject areas, and upper division units in my major only. I thought that was the case for just about everyone.

What I've learned so far in this discussion:

1) A college student has two choices, studying all the time or partying all the time
2) To introduce culture at a college, open a bar
3) It's okay if the bar is across town as long as you provide cab rides for the students
4) It may not be a good idea to take a philosophy class
5) The main reason to go to college is so you can get a high-paying job
6) Modeling and simulation is probably not "real" engineering

I think I'm caught up now -- thanks!

Nerd.

For what it is worth I find absolutely nothing comforting about math. I guess that's why I'm NOT an engineer!
