The ice storm of 1985. A solid feet thick of ice and sleet and is some bad juju.

And in the way back corners of my mind, we had a major event in 1964 or 1965. Our neighborhood in NW Hsv was a giant playground of all us boomer kids.

This was the 4th highest snow total (taking into account multiday events) and the third highest single day total in Huntsville history according to Al.com.

I think just over 9" was the official measurement. It was the third highest "multiday" total in HSV history.

The 1993 snow I was in my freshman year of college....I remember that well. We were not really into preparation!

Just looked at that but that was over a two day period. I looked at my old pictures and it was 6 inches over in providence.

I lived in Chattanooga during the "Blizzard of 93". There were 22 inches officially recorded at the Chatt airport, and I lived about 2 miles from there. But what made that so bad was it started as sleet/freezing rain, then snow, it was incredibly windy, and we lost power for a few days. And it was sooooo cold and windy after it snowed, it wasn't conducive to playing in it.

This snow yesterday/last night was perfect for playing in and building stuff! I just came in and it's melting fast now that the sun is out. I got so warm I took my coat off and was just fine in a t-shirt & sweatshirt.

The worst snowstorm for me was in January 1988. 10 inches of snow brought Huntsville to a standstill. I only got out after a couple days because a privately owned snowplow cleared our street. I don't know who paid for that but I doubt it was the city.

A Look Back at the January 1988 Winter Storm
NWS Huntsville January 1988 Winter Storm

The worst ice storm for me was in 1985. Ice laden tree branches fell on power lines and caused a record power outage. I was without power for several days. It got pretty cold in my apartment after a few days without power in January. BTW, Huntsville caught so much flack from so that afterwards they sent out trucks and butchered any tree that had branches anywhere near a power line.

The 1985 ice storm was terrible, and awesome at the same time. If I remember, it hit two nights in a row. We stood outside and you could see the blue/green flashes as the transformers blew. Every tree on our property lost most of the North facing branches. We ended up moving a mattress in by the fire place and living there a few days. Lucky for us, that was before kids so a cold house wasn't as big of a problem.

And, that storm was an end to Coshatt's motorcycle dealership on Jordan. He got busted for gouging prices on kerosene heaters.

The ice storm of '85 put a fear of sleet/freezing rain in me that I have to this day. I was a young teen & days of no electricity & spotty phone service just about drove me insane! In the days before cell phones, having no phone service as a teen was probably worse than being cold!!!
