We have had some interesting discussions here in 2007 when I was looking for a place to move to in Northern Alabama. I surveyed Arab, Cullman and the rear by areas. Got a good home in Huntsville but was not good enough for me as I was looking for a quiet place with no neighbors nearby. Finally I got a place on 38 acres in Moulton area with forest and lakes, or ponds if you prefer that. Now I need to move, as I cant live in one place for more than 10 years.

I am relocating to Huntsville from Oak Ridge. Born Decatur, graduated UAB, Phd UT.

Just a typical transfer, not the BRAC, I volunteered.

Looking for a house, in a great area, surrounding Huntsville, on West side, with access to Arsenal and Airport.

Got kids still in school, so need good High School. Will need a basic 4 bed home and 2100+ sq ft.

This is not a screen for houses, rather a request for opinions of suburbs and neighborhoods.

I have chosen the Harvest, Al. area, it seems nice and somewhat friendly. I met a lot of folks, most of which wanted to

know who had the Tennessee Tags, driving in their area. If you are one of those people, Thank you, I just drove down Saturday.

Please inform me as to the area, doesn't have to be Harvest, it can even be on the other side of the river . I like to have minimum of 2 acres, which will keep me out of some small subdivisions.

So for you locals, thank you in advance. It will be great to finally come home and eventually retire.

The 2 acre minimum will be the stickler. Not many of those left, especially within the urban/suburban area. Otherwise, Madison and Monrovia meet your other criteria.

For two acres, I would look out in the county. Madison County, Limestone County, or even Morgan County. Cheaper land and fewer restrictions. Now, wanting a good high school is the kicker. Good schools include almost any of the Madison/Madison County schools, and several others - Athens is good, East Limestone OK, Grissom and Huntsville good, Arab good....honestly, even in so-called poorly rated schools, your child can get a good education if they're a serious student and they have good home adult supervision. Decatur is not rated high because of the high Latino ratio, but we've had kids win scholarships to MIT, Vanderbilt, etc.
Things have changed since you left Decatur.
Look around, ask questions, see what will suit you best.

As I set here with my eyes about to crawl out of the sockets, hacking and sneezing, I wanted to inquire about allergies in Northern AL. My family is considering a move up there from the Dothan area either this summer or summer 2021. We moved to Dothan from NC in 2013 and allergies are killing me and my daughter down here. We both had them in NC but nothing like down here. There never seems to be a break from them as we have very little seasonal change of any sort down here. An allergist told me it is due to the constant growing season and plant mold (tons of it from peanut production in this area). Is anyone personally familiar with allergy response in Southern AL and Norther Al and how they differ? Worse or better up there? Just curious. Thanks.

Allergies are probably worse, if anything. Dothan doesn't have as much between it and the gulf. Much of the weather here comes up through Mississippi and Louisiana, picking up pollens along the way. Alabama in general is bad for allergies. Birmingham sits in a valley where the ozone levels can make your eyes water. In north Alabama, I notice that when a cold front comes down from the northwest and Canada any allergies are lessened.

I've had doctors, ENT specialists, and an acupuncturist ALL comment on how allergies are particularly bad in the area.
