City leaders gathered Wednesday to celebrate Huntsville's Old Town Historic District earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Mayor Tommy Battle, Council President Mark Russell, district residents and members of the Historic Preservation Commission of Huntsville met in front of 127 Walker Ave. west of Dallas Street to announce the expanded district and designation.

Battle said the distinction "further recognizes, at a national level, the importance and scale of these marvelous historic properties in our city."

"These residences help us tell the stories of life in Huntsville from its earliest days in the 1800s," he said in a statement. "We treasure these properties, our visitors love them, and generations to come will be grateful we made the effort to preserve their integrity."
