"The name of the town was an unintentional misspelling by the U.S. Postal Service in 1882 of the city's intended name, taken from Arad Thompson, the son of the town founder and first postmaster Stephen Tuttle Thompson. Two other names for the town were sent to the Postal Service for consideration: "Ink" and "Bird"."

FWIW, there are plenty of odd names of towns all over the U.S.. Pick up a gazetteer and read the listings or just search the main City-Data site.

It was a great place to raise my children.
I was from Ct, but moved to Huntsville in '76. Moved to Arab in '81. Every neighbor on my street was exceedingly friendly and I can't tell you how many times over the years we'd sit out on each others porches visiting and drinking tea.
Bags of veggies handed out from one anothers gardens and when my daughter wiped out on her bicycle on the street one day, about 8-10 people were out there asap pulling her up off the road and with towels mopping up the blood from her face before I could get to her.
There were times I pulled up in the driveway after long day at work and my neighbor would holler out her door that she fixed enough dinner for all of us, just c'mon over.
I could fill a thread.

Great place!
