We are repainting our house (last done about six years ago) and have two estimates. One estimate is considerably more but involves TWO coats of paint. The other is for just ONE coat.

Suggestions? Experiences?

Two coats usually the best way to go.

check the condition of the wood ' repairs ' if any should be needed should be done, scrape any loose paint such as peeling and prime any bare spots before painting. What brand of paint is being used, are you buying the paint or are the painters supplying it. If you have chips or open joints do not let them pressure was the house to remove loose paint or bare spots. spend money on better grades of paint not 'contractor grade paint'.Ask for references from the painters from former customers and from the paint store where the paint is coming from.Ask for license and insurance proof. If the job is done well 2 coats should last .Ask each bidder to quote you one coat and two coats and compare the bids .they should be pretty close to each other. good luck.

Thumbs down painting one or two coats

P.S. if they need money in advance to buy material tell them no thanks.

Also depends on the quality of paint the painter plans on using. Some better quality paints will only require one coat...and it is usually better to spend a little more on a better quality paint that you will typically get more years out of than a lesser paint that may not last as long.

Might be a good idea to seal/prime the existing paint before you apply new paint
