I've given to them before. They are a great service to the community and the lady who founded/runs the place is truly and angel of mercy.

She also runs a thrift store at the 2412 Memorial Parkway location: Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen and Thrift Store - Store Hours and Meal Times

If anyone has any items sitting around in their garage or home they want to get rid of I'm sure that would help too and donations are tax deductible.

I believe around the beginning of summer there was an article in the Decatur Daily about how the local Salvation Army thrift store was hurting because so many for-profit and fund-raising thrift stores have opened. They had plenty of buyers but donations of items had dropped a lot.

IMESHO, some of that has to do with how organized the store is and how easy they make it to take donations. For instance, I'm Catholic and I'd give everything to St. Vincent De Paul society in Huntsville because I truly believe in their mission and the help they provide. However, the local store makes it really difficult to donate. On the other hand, Asbury in Madison, makes it really easy - they have a loading dock, they have lots of young teens on hand to help me carry stuff, they take stuff all day every day, and they have a tax receipt ready for me. Salvation Army in Madison has an easy enough loading dock, but they never have help available to help me unload, so if I have a lot of stuff or heavy stuff, I go to Asbury.
